As I was afterwards told

I would like to ask about the use of as used in the sentence from the Travels of Guilliver.

"I was in the utmost astonishment, and roared so loud, that they all ran back in a fright; and some of them, as I was afterwards told, were hurt with the falls they got by leaping from my sides upon the ground. ".

So would you please explain the use of "as" in the above sentence and what does "as I was afterwards told" mean?

Thank you.
