Some people use this term to express merely : AS I UNDERSTOOD. Is it correct please?

As a BrE speaker, I think I would barely understand this meaning (even though "get" in the sense of "understand" is familiar in other expressions). Perhaps an AmE speaker could comment on usage in the US.
