As he puts it / becoming the badge of

Hi teachers,

When universal clerical celibacy was established in 1139, it was intended, as Diarmaid MacCulloch puts it in his new book Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years, to "set up a barrier between the clergy and laity, becoming the badge of clerical status."

1. What does "it" refer to?

2. What does "becoming the badge of " mean?

Thank you.

1. "it" is required grammatically, but is semantically fairly redundant, merely referring to the thing that is being put (i.e. being expressed).

2. "badge" refers to an attribute (celibacy) that identifies and differentiates this group of people (the clergy).

Hi Mr. Wordy,

Thank you for your help.

What does "becoming" mean? Does it have to do with what had established became the badge to distingusih clergy. (I'm phrasing it well.)

Just the usual meaning: coming to be a certain thing.

Originally celibacy was not a badge of clerical status (because the idea hadn't been thought of). Then, later, it was a badge of clerical status. In other words, it became a badge of clerical status.
