1-Stupid that he is, he told everything to me.
2-Stupid as he is, he told everything to me.

Which of the above corresponds to which of the below:
a-Because he is stupid, he told everything to me.

b-Although he is stupid, he told everything to me.

"As stupid as he is" is a measurement of his stupidity.
"Stupid as he is" is an absolute.

I'm not, either, but it seems that your examples are different in that the word that substitutes the words, rather than works with them.
