Hi,
I was as happy as X was when he betrayed his friend.
I was as happy as X when he betrayed his friend.
Which one is right? The intended meaning is: X was happy when he betrayed his friend. Now I am as happy as X (because I too am doing something similar).
Thanks.
Those are both possible, but it seems odd that anyone would be happy for betraying their friend. )

Those are both possible, but it seems odd that anyone would be happy for betraying their friend. (In fact, "as happy" in your sentences could imply "not at all happy", but you do say that "X was happy when he betrayed his friend".)
