As good as broke

Hi

Would you please tell me what the phrase "as good as broke" means? What does "broke" mean here? Thanks for your help.

Some with acne have been so mortified as good as broke by it, which they have been driven to turn recluses.

Generally, "as good as [adjective]" means not really, but close enough.

He was as good as dead when rescued from the river - She was as good as elected before the judging even began - We were as good as enemies when we parted company.

I don't see that 'broke' here makes sense, unless they are talking about a broken spirit or something like that.
