As for contrasting

Hi Guys!

In the following sentence: "The good teacher consciously recognizes the dramatic possibilities in his profession as the average or second-rate teacher does not". Is 'as' correct in this sentence for contrasting. It doesn't sound right to me. Can we use as to contast a positive with a negative?

Many thanks

I think "as" is not impossible (in the sense of "at the same time as"), but I stuttered when I reached "does not", so I guess it doesn't sound quite right to me either. "while" seems better.
