...as fast as possible...or...as fast as is possible

Which is correct?

I would like to visit as many countries as possible--or--I would like to visit as many countries as is possible.

Thanks

Both are correct but, as a native English speaker, I would omit "is". I can't think of any circumstance where I would say it.

The 'as is possible' version seems to suit an interposed adverb, e.g.

1. You must be fully conversant with as many software packages as is humanly possible.

2. Do it as soon as is physically possible.
