You said we have to use " ago" , but there's a sentence written like that "These cave paintings are believed to date as far back as 1,700 years.
Without writing "ago" do you think it's incorrect?

The verb "to date" changes the situation. We don't always use "ago" when the it's "date as far back as". You can use it if you want to, though.
