as dropping in as...as sentences

Ok that's jsut something I've noticed reading.

It's possible to drop the first as in sentences like this he's (as) red as tomato and he's (as) free as a bird . Infromal though, I reckon

However it doesn't work in his car (is) as fast as mine and he's (as) tall as my dad


Are my observations correct?
