As did vs. like

Hi everyone,

I would just like to know if the two sentences below have different meanings for a native English speaker, Thank you very much.

"He drank a lot, as did most of his students."

"He drank a lot, like most of his students."

1. Yes, "like" is not considered good style for academic writing.

2. For me, I expected "did" at the end of the sentence with "like."

* "He drank a lot, like most of his students did."
