An environmental activist Josh Berry was on a sailing trip from California to Hawaii in 2006 when, on the fourteenth day, he encountered the sea of plastic that has come to be known as the "Great Pacific Garbage Path". The following is his description of the trip, as delivered in an address at the U.N. World Oceans Day conference in 2009.

Q) What does "as" mean in the last sentence? I don't think it means because or like.
