Question

With the cost of running the jury system amounting to over nine million dollars last year, the general public is most concerned by the costly nature of the jury system, as confirmed by the Institute of Criminology.

Would this sound like natural thing to say in an oral presentation? I am little unsure about 'as confirmed...'.

It is OK for a formal speech or news article. In casual conversation, it would sound stiff.

I don't like the repetition here, that I have maked in bold. I'd try to avoid it.

eg The cost of running the jury system amounted to over nine million dollars last year. The general public is most concerned by these annual expenditures, as confirmed by the Institute of Criminology.

What exactly did the Institute confirm? The annual costs? The fact that the system is costly? The fact that the public is concerned?

The Institute did a survey and it suggested that the majority of the general public thought that the criminal justice system was inefficient. The same survey also suggested that an overwhelming majority of those surveyed learnt about the criminal justice system through the media. Since the media tends to report on serious cases which are tried by jury and that trials by jury do tend to be longer, I concluded that the general public is concerned by the costly nature of the jury system. I made this deduction because I can't find any survey that asks the the general public specifically about the jury system.

The annual cost was reported by the department which oversees the jury system.

Just wondering. Is it better not to say 'with the cost...'? It's just that I am sure how to link 'the cost of running the jury system...' with the previous sentence. Should I even be worrying about it?

The above seems fine to me.

Are you talking only about criminal juries? I don't think the term 'victim' is used in civil cases. I think they say 'plaintif'.

'Amounted' means 'cost'.
'Mounted' means 'rose/increased'.
