As close as damn it

What does it mean "as close as damn it"? I have found somewhere that this phrase has something to do with freemasonry. But still I did not understand the meaning.

Edit. Google lists 7000 hits. I can't find a definition, but there are indeed references to freemasonry, at least one purporting to be from their own literature. There's also a quote from Ulysses. (Joyce)

It seems to mean something like "as close as you can possibly get [to X]."
