You should always protect your property as best you can.

You should always protect your property as best as you can.

What's the difference between the two sentences above?

Although you hear it all the time, "as best as you can" is incorrect in my opinion. It's one of my pet hates actually. It should be "as best you can".

Although you hear it all the time, "as best as you can" is incorrect in my opinion. It's one of my pet hates actually. It should be "as best you can".

By the usual rules of modern English, there is no obvious grammatical explanation for either "as best as you can" or "as best you can". Therefore, it just comes down to what is idiomatic. As far as I am concerned, the idiomatic expression is "as best you can", and "as best as you can" is an error, resulting from confusion with the more familiar pattern "as ~ as ~".
