"~as ~ as~" structure restoration

See the below sentence constructed with the "~as~as~" structure.

1) He was glad to see as great a distance as possible between himself and his son.
2) He was glad to see his son at as a great distance possible between himself and his son as there (it) was a great distance possible between himself and his son.

I restored #1) to #2); I'm curious about whether or not my restoration is correct,
and I'd like to know what you will restore 1) to.

=> He was glad to think there is as great a distance as it is possible /between himself and his son.
