As ... as S V, S V ... (grammar and meaning)

"As well as Houston is playing, I still think Dallas will claim the conference title."

Could someone show the grammatical dissection of the above sentence and the meaning?

For some reason, I took "as well as Houston" as "Houston, too".

Now I understand the meaning part.

As for the grammar part, it seems this is not the "as well as ..." (..., too) construction.

So, what could it be?

Is it "as well + as Houston is playing"; I have never seen such a grammatical construction, though...?

As well as Houston is playing, ... = Considering how well Houston is playing (i.e., they are playing very well), ....

Instead of a grammatical explanation, you would probably do better to see more examples. Substitute "Considering how (very) X ..." for "As X as ..." to get the meaning.

True, in that case. I thought about the "although" paraphrase, too, but unfortunately it doesn't work in the general case. If the continuation of the sentence were different, it could mean something more like 'Because Houston is playing well ...'.
