have

I must (signifying obligation to return in kind) affect your life as you have (affected, which in this instance is inferred) mine.

If this is a question for an exam - either oral or written - it is abominable and does not test true comprehension of the language.

Hi,

JohnParisIf this is a question for an exam
No, it's not John. I was writing an e-mail to a friend and I couldn't decide which word to come there. That's why I wanted to learn the options. Next time I attemp to make this sentence I'd know my options. So do you think we can only bring "have", or would it be the best choice among them

I would say that 'have' is the only acceptble answer

Hi,

JohnParisI would say that 'have' is the only acceptble answer
Is it because of the verb? Let's put the verb aside. Regardless the verb, would "have" still be the only acceptable word to complete the sentence. Please note that this is not an exam question. Consider your daily speaking.

e.g: I should/must write you as much as you _____

I must affect your life as deeply as you _____ mine.

I take "I must affect" to mean "It must be the case that I affect", i.e., "The only possible conclusion is that I affect". I don't take it as "I have to affect". I'm wondering if you've chosen the right modal verb in choosing must.

The following seem reasonable to me.

I must affect your life as deepl

Hi CJ,

I could say that what I meant to say is close to saying "you do (assuming she keeps doing) me a lot of favour, so in exchange for the good, I really have to do something impressive for you". I hope this clarifies my thought. And if this make you change your answer, please let me know.

Thanks for the reply. Somehow I knew I had alternatives to the "have"

johnerif this makes you change your answer
No. Same three choices. I would change the beginning a little, though.

I feel that I should do as much for you as you [do / did / have (done)] for me.

( ) indicates "optional".
