as an immigrant or as immigrants?

The respondents of this survey said that their greatest challenge as immigrants living in America was the language barrier.

from the above sentence, is the pluralized noun"immigrants" grammatically correct"? i personally think it should be a singular "as a immigrant" please somebody give me an answer thanks ~!
