1. "He bought me a gift as a way of saying "Thank you" for helping him."

2. "He bought me a gift as a way to say "Thank you" for helping him."

3. "He bought me a gift as a way of thanking me for helping him."

4. "He bought me a gift to thank me for helping him."

5. "He bought me a gift to thank me for my help."

6. "He bought me a gift to appreciate my help."

(1) and (2) seem correct to me as shown, but in speaking, it may not sound good. (4), (5), and 6 are straightforward. They may sound better for usage.

Wait for the teachers' answers; they may have a better version, though.

Both ways are OK. The first sounds a little wooden to me. The second is how I would put it, and no additional punctuation is called for. It's like shouting fire in a crowded theater, where "fire" goes without.
