Can you give me alternatives to the expression "a function of" that have the same meaning?

Example:

2. Express y as a function of x.
3. Observe the magnetic properties as a function of time.

How can it be used outside mathematical fields then? If it can have a broader meaning, can it not be loosely replaced at least?
