As (a) backup

I have two very similar sentences:

1) I’ve got my mother as a backup in case the babysitter cancels.
2) I'll be out there as backup in case you need anything.

I wonder if you could tell me whether or not the indefinite article 'a' is optional in both cases? Perhaps "as a backup" and "as backup" have different meanings?
