As

Hi,

In adult surgery, it is not routine to promise that someone can be with you in the operating room till you go to sleep, or to have family members a standard part of recovery room care. Many hospitals will let a family member stay overnight with an adult patient, but policies vary hospital by hospital, ward by ward.

...to have family members a standard part of recovery room care.

I have a question about this part. Is it possible to insert "as" between "members" and "a standard part of recovery room care without causing a significant meaning change"?

...to have family members as a standard part of recovery room care.

If no, what would make as inadmissible in the above sentence, whereas it's allowed(obligatory, I think) in the following sentence?

I'm lucky to have him as a friend.

I'd appreciate your help.

Inserting "as" between "members" and "a" is okay grammatically and the sentence would mean more or less the same thing. However by doing this you lose the rhythm of the original sentence. "

The writer wrote it like that deliberately to give his writing "movement." Putting "as" in would "bog down" the sentence, and it then loses its "acceleration."

Yes, that's possible. Same meaning. No problem.
