As

The sentences:
Worring about measuring time precisely, and being paid for units of time, is what distinguishes the West from many other civilizations. It is what compelled human beings to ever more technological creativity, as we broke time down into smaller and more accurate units.

What does "as " mean here? I think it's close to "because", but my book says it's "while"...

There are some other typos in your quote, Taka, but yes-- 'ever more' (= more and more) creativity 'as' (= at the same time that = while) we continued to subdivide time into smaller and smaller units.

Thank you, and sorry about the typos (maybe I'm tired).

So, you're saying "as..." modifies "more creativity", right?

My book says it modifies "compelled".

No, I'm not saying that-- I don't think I said at all. You were asking about the meaning of 'as', which I said was 'while', not 'because'. Sorry if my answer was confusing. As the book states, the clause is an adverbial for 'compelled'.
