Hello, teachers!
Would you please help me with 'as'?

1. The old man recalled the village [as] it had been before the war. [Is this correct?]
1a. The old man recalled the village [which/that] it had been before the war. [How about this?]

2. He said he was to have accompanied Bush, as was a secret service agent. [Is this correct?]
2a. He said he was to have accompanied Bush, as a secret service agent. [How about this?]

If both are correct in each group, Could you please tell me the difference in meaning?

1 and 1a. have similar meanings. 1. is stylistically more neutral. 1a. may evoke more sympathy for the old man. This way of phrasing it brings in a sigh of nostalg
