Artillery of preservatives and artificial ingredients

Hi,

It has been both hero and villain. For years, health-food advocates and nutritionists have heaped scorn on the Twinkie for its empty calories, its high sugar and fat content and its artillery of preservatives and artificial ingredients. In his 2007 book, “Twinkie, Deconstructed,” Steve Ettlinger counted 39 ingredients in a Twinkie. “I was astounded to find ingredients made from five kinds of rocks,” he told The Riverfront Times of St. Louis.

1. Is "artillery" being used figuratively?
2. Is it correct to interpret it as "a large, powerful amount of"?

Thank you.

Yes and yes. Any cake with 39 ingredients should be looked upon suspiciously from a nutritional standpoint. Luckily for the consumer, the law requires manufacturers to list the ingredients of the product on its packaging.
