Articles with the names of lakes

I have the following question. What article should be used with the names of lakes. I know if we put the word "lake" before its name, there is no article (lake Michigan) but without "lake" is it necessary to use "the"? How should I say: the Ontario or just Ontario?

Hi,

The Great Lakes, and a few others, have names with 'Lake' as the first word'. This includes 'Lake Ontario'.

But most lakes are referred to with the word 'Lake' at the end, eg 'Century Lake'.
