The word actually is "reforestation". It is the word I've been typing wrong all along. Sorry about that. I feel so stupid.

OK, so that would give:

Wangari Maathai called them foresters without diplomas._______(1) foresters worked hard to plant trees. Now, _____________ (2) reforestation picked up remarkably the forests.

The last sentence still isn't correct English. I can only guess that "picked up" is meant in the sense
