Articles and 'house' , 'home'

Hello,
Could you say which articles go wih the following words:
house, home.

I know we normally say 'at home' but I have found a sentence of this kind :
'The elderly prefer to stay in their own homes'.
Can we say both, then? I am in/at home...?

What about the word 'house'
I think we say : I am in a/my house.
I have chanced upon this sentence: 'She has organized a party at my house'.
Can we say both: I am in/at (a?my?) house.
What about prepositions? Are they necessary as far as the word 'house' is concerned?

Thank you in advance for your help!
