A discussion with a fellow teacher leads to more confusion.
I feel the following sentences are fine but she insists on the doubting.

1. She makes the coffee.
2. The doctor treats patients. ( I favour " a doctor" more)
3. The fisherman catches fish/the fish.
4. They are buying (cakes/ the cakes) in the canteen. (I won't use "the cakes" unless there is more detail given to the object - cakes")

Please verify all the above. Thanks

The sentences are too simple in isolation, and all of those variations are possible. More context with each sentence is needed to decide whether the articles are needed.

2. The/A doctor is treating patients.
3. The/A fisherman is catching a fish.
4. They/The students are buying cakes in the/a canteen.

This may be a regional/cultural thing. In the UK, "cakes" would be a fairly normal word in that sentence.

The word "cupcakes" is also used over here, but people would often just say "cakes". Of course, cakes can be much larger too.
