Thanks, CJ. I didn't know that existed. I've ordered a copy and am going to dump my bulky and impenetrable Cambridge Grammar of the English Language.

Just be aware, in case anyone asks. The last time I checked, only parts of the Huddleston book are available on-line at that link, so as far as I know, you do have to purchase the hard copy if you want the whole thing.

They precede nouns and other forms used as nouns, yes, but there may be intervening adjectives:

A hat
A green hat
A greening of America
