Dear *,

I'm an EE student. Recently I'm writing a thesis, in which I wrote:
In probabilistic simulation, there are two major challenges: temporal correlation(1) and spatial correlation. Temporal correlation(2) refers to .... and spatial correlation refers to ...

But today I read a book it said:
A cube has two parts: an input part (3) and an output part. The input part(4) is defined to be ...
, and the output part is ...

I think, "correlation" is here an uncountable noun. Therefore, no article may be required at (1). However, in the book text I read today, "the" is used at (4) which confused me. Must I use "The" at (2)? Thanks

Best regards,

I would use articles here. You're using 'correlation' as a count noun; there are two correlations here: temporal and spacial. The noun has its plural form, hence articles.

Thank you CJ.

Why mustn't I use "The" at (2)? I read other papers; they also had similar sentences as I wrote. So I knew it is correct. They didn't use "the" there.

I wondered why in such a situation zero article is also correct. Is it because "correlation" is uncountable? What is the difference between zero article and "the" at (2).

Yes. That's correct.

"the correlation" is used if there is a specific correlation which has been mentioned earlier in the text. You

Thanks for your reply.

So after defining the term, e.g., "temporal correlation", I continue writing, when I refer to it, I have to use "the". For example:
In probabilistic simulation, there are two major challenges: temporal correlation and spatial correlation. Temporal correlation refers to ... and spatial correlation refers to ... To cope with the modeling of >>the<&
