Article with sidewalk

Hi teachers

1. Don't spit when walking on a/the sidewalk.

2. I am going to teach you how to behave when you're walking on a/the sidewalk.

Either is correct to be for the usage, right? The difference is: 'a sidewalk' is one of many in the city, does not matter which one. 'the sidewalk' is that part of the city where people walk. Is that correct?
