Article with lunatic

Should it be with or without the article?

He is a lunatic.
He is lunatic.

Both seem correct, but I am not sure.

Thanks teacher. So it is unlike with the use of "crazy" where yiu don't need the article as in "he is crazy". Am I right?

The point is that 'lunatic' as an adjective is now rare; it is usually a noun; on the other hand 'crazy' is rarely a noun.

I see. It makes sense why “crazy” is odd as a noun in this sentence

So in these examples:

He is a lunatic/crazy.
Lunatic/crazy here are nouns.

He is lunatic/crazy.
Lunatic/cr
