Article with baton

Hi,
For a school assignment (last weekend activities):
Last weekend I went to a nice concert. I sat down and listened. The conductor was waving a/the baton. The music was beautiful.
I cannot decide: a baton or the baton?
My attempted answers:
1. His baton = best (but it's not an article)
2. The baton = second best choice. Every conductor has one, so it's clear which baton it is.
3. A baton = least favourite choice, but also OK. It answers the question: what was the conductor waving? A baton.

Am I on the right track with this?
