Article use with two or more nouns

Hello,

Can someone please tell me if I should be placing an article before an adjective describing two or more nouns (and even more so if the noun pair comprises countable and uncountable nouns)!

For example:

John finalized the project with an exceptional speed and quality.

or

John finalized the project with exceptional speed and quality.

Thanks!

No article is used in your example because speed and quality are not specified quantities:
John finalized the project with exceptional speed and quality.

If you make it specific, then use an article:
John finalized the project at a speed that was achieved by no one else on the team.
