Article use in sentence

Which is correct with or without the article?

Keep a record of our daily sales.
Keep recod of our daily sales.

I think that both are possible with different meanings but I am not sure. Please enlighten me.

I though it might function the same way as the fillowing sentence:

"keep track of our sales".

I guess words work differently. To confirm, it would be wrong to use "a" with "t
