Article use

Hello,

a) We usually say 'tears of joy' etc. Can the article 'the' (the tears of joy) be avoided at all times? He was smiling with tears of joy. (here it seems okay) Jesus washed away our sins with the tears of blood. (here, is 'the' necessary?). Also, can 'his/her tears of joy' be used?

b) While Mary's sense of obligation concerned society, his concerned himself. (although awkward, is it grammatically correct? Since 'sense of obligation' has been mentioned in the main clause, wouldn't 'his' alone suffice in the second clause?)

c) can we say 'the rest' to mean people without saying 'the rest of them' etc. He was angry with the rest.

Thanks.
