Article usage with "Earth"

0This is a grammatical question which should be relatively straight forward, but for some reason, it's not... What are the rules concerning the article usage with the word Earth. That is to say, when can you say "The Earth" and when can you say "Earth"? The question applies both to the planet and to the non-capitalised form meaning "ground". Thanks in advance!0-
