Article Usage

In the below sentence, is insertion of the indefinite article "a" before "mentor" and "mentee" wrong? If so, can you please explain why? My instinct says it is wrong, but I'm not able to substantiate it with proper explanation referring to the article usage rules. Thanks in advance.

The relationship between a more experienced researcher as mentor and a novice
researcher as mentee is interactional and interdependent with both parties required to
contribute to the effectiveness of the partnership.

Top answer

Mentor / mentee are "roles" and "the more experienced researcher" and "the novice researcher" are players. There are several choices of articles (definite, indefinite, null), depending on the degree of formality and emphasis. Just make parallel noun phrases.
