Article Usage

I had the following sentence appearing as the fourth sentence in the abstract of a research article:

The emphasis is placed on Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, the major mammalian host for the production of therapeutic proteins

Is the article "The" before "emphasis" needed? Also, what if I change the define article "the" before "major" to indefinite article "a" (as I feel indefinite article there too seems to be correct). I've gone through several books and several online sites, but there is no clear rules defined for this and though if there are rules, when applying the rule practically, they don't seem to fit the context.

For e.g., one of the best resources that I've had for article usage is found in the link. Even this does not seem to help me a lot in article usage.

Can someone help in this regard? Probably, Mister Micawber can step in again to my help.
