Article usage

Hi,

A couple of doubts: They were nice and had therefore refused to comment. (is the structure okay?)

2) I am assuming article is necessary when we mention something specific: The jedi fought against 'the' dark forces of nature. (article required) "The" is not necessary in this case, however: He fought against dark forces.

3) Is 'that' the past form of 'this'? Can 'this' never be used in past narrative?

Regards,
