Article- The/A/An

Hi
when referencing "road" , if the sentence is:

I looked out of a window. I saw a man crossing "a"/ or "the" road? Since I hadn't mentioned the road before, should I be using "a"?

The answer to this is "the"

If you're completely lost in the woods, and you meet a stranger, you might ask him, "Do you know if there's a road near here?"

But unless you're "lost," you usually have a pretty good idea of where the closest road is.

If you don't specify, "the freeway/the expressway, the road to the beach
