Just a follow up Q: I see that authors almost always use the article. Why is that?

Ex. the philosopher Spinoza... the marketing expert Sculley... etc.

Just a style?

It might be a stylistic thing for writers based on the French use of the article when a proper noun is modified: La belle France.
