Article "the"

Why article “the” is used before Pubjab, the Indian province, andSudan, but not with Arunachal Pradesh orItaly,SpainorMali? I am quite intrigued. Would you please explain it?

Sudan was once officially known as The Republic of Sudan, shortened to The Sudan. The use of 'the' with Punjab was in acknowledgement of the meaning of the words, The 'Land of the Five Waters'. These days, the 'the' is optional for both countries.
