Which of these two phrases is valid:

1. We perform summation over the index I.
2. We perform the summation over the index I.

The same question for the words integration, differentiation, multiplication, search, exploration, inquiry, cleaning, fusion, welding, and other actions.

Can we use the analogy with the phrase: we practice sports.

In my opinion, you do not need to use any article before such words. They are expressing general concepts. You are not refering to a specific summation or integration.

Having read hundreds of math type papers, using these words without article sounds better to my ear.
