Article question - closing of acquistions

Hi,

I am not sure if I should use an article before ‘closing’ in the following sentence. On the one hand I feel that an article is required because ‘of’ that follows ‘closing’. On the other hand I have seen many native speakers not use an article before ‘closing’. I am not sure why native speakers don’t use an article in this case.

1. The weak results are attributable to the timing of closing of transactions.

Thanks,

MG.

The article is optional; the style problem is '-ing of -ing', which reads awkwardly. I suggest something like this: The weak results are attributable to the timing of transaction closings.
