Article question

Dear Teachers:

Here are two sentences:

i) I bought the shares for $600 and sold them for $1,000. I therefore pocketed $400.
ii) I bought the shares for $600 and sold them for $1,000, pocketing the $400.

Can someone explain where there is no definite article before the sum in (i) and a definite article before the sum in (i) (this comes from a text written by a native speaker)?
Could I include it in (i) and drop it in (ii)?
