article Q

Ex.

At the theater, I saw a famous movie, The God Fathers.
At the theater, I saw a famous musical, Wicked.

Q. Should it be "THE" instead of "A" or is it okay with "A" in front of famous?

Thanks in advance.

Both "a" and "the" are possible. "the" has a stronger assumption that the reader or listener already knows of the movie. Because that would be expected of "famous" movies, "the" is generally preferable in my opinion.

  • The famous movie that I am aware of is called The Godfather .
  • I am not a big film buff, but I have never heard of the musical Wicked , so I wonder how famous it actually is.
