Article missing: She has undergone an amazing...

Hi

I read this sentence today in an Oxford Dictionary. Is it OK--I mean, no articles?

She has undergone an amazing metamorphosis from awkward schoolgirl to beautiful woman.

Why not: an awkward school girl and a beautiful woman?

Thanks,

Tom

It's the same zero article as in "he was elected president". It's similar, anyway. "Awkward schoolgirl" is a category of human, just as "president" is.

I think I see the phrases awkward schoolgirl and beautiful woman here as a kind of title.

Related phrases include eg Beautiful woman that she was, she drove men wild.

Using the articles is not incorrect.
